OK so here we go a simple step by step plan for how to achieve your business goals, remember something simple is following this through in a step 1 through 10 order (it has a fat loss example as originally I’m a personal trainer), try and take from it the principle behind the message, not just the method .
1. Step one have a clear goal in mind (start with the end in mind).
Ok so here we are at part one and it all starts with the big question of what exactly is it that you want? It might seem like a simple question but time and time again I’ve seen and spoke to people that either have no clue as to what exactly it is that they want or they think they know and after some well placed questions and some talking it turns out that no fat loss isn’t what they really wanted, they in fact felt unloved if they were fat. After coaching them and asking about their thoughts, feelings, emotions and beliefs (TFEB) it turns out they became happier with themselves, realised that they weren’t unloved and began to turn their life around, not once did i even mention or give any exercise programs out, in fact once the beliefs changed, they stopped eating as much and actively chose healthier options and walked more; the weight just came off anyway!
This example was just to illustrate a point that it’s very important to understand exactly what it is you really want. One of the things I’ve spoken to people about with regards to achieving their goals is the necessity for clarity not vague goals. For example:
“I want to lose weight!”
VAGUE!!!!!!!”! Sorry that was a subtle hint there; sorry if that was a bit in your face I just felt the need to illustrate the point. Something to consider would be how much:
“I want to lose 10-12lbs”
Hey now we’re getting there we have a target so where from or what would this look like?
“Well I want to lose 10-12lbs from around my stomach, legs and arse.”
OK fantastic, now we’re on the way to getting there, so what would you look like if you achieved that 10-12lbs of weight loss?
“I’d have a bum that lifts up and doesn’t head down south, my stomach would be flat and tight and when i look down it wouldn’t make me feel ashamed and also my legs would be lean and conditioned and look amazing in my size 12 jeans.”
Brilliant so all of your goals have said about a shape and how you’d feel so what about the weight loss, if you lost 12lbs of fat but added 12 lbs of muscle, yet had that amazing shape you described would that matter?
“Err no, as long as I have that shape I described and I feel a lot better about me, then the weight itself wouldn’t matter.”
So here we are, the goal is a lot more specific and gives you a better target to aim for, and something simple we use in martial arts is you can’t hit a target if you don’t know what it is..! Also we note that the original goal of “I want to lose weight” has gone; it was never the intended aim. Now this is like a strategy of peeling the onion, onions have layers (god bless Shrek), your aim is to peel the layers away as much as possible until you hit the truth of what you truly want and why you want it.
The big why is literally saying not only what i want but why do i really want that thing, sounds mysterious but hey it’s actually quite simple really.
Stay tuned for part 2 where I reveal the truth about the big why and the all important questions you should be asking yourself about your goals.
